Defining what is geocaching is the primary purpose of this website, the how, where, when and who are also covered by a number of our posts. But before we start I’d like to welcome you to the world of geocaching. The fun starts now.
The adventure is a world wide treasure hunt using Geocaching GPS devices to locate the longitude and latitude co-ordinates that can be found online. It is easily affordable, great fun and offers plenty of incidental exercise, new discoveries and experiences. It can be gone as individuals, groups, families or couples and is one of the worlds most rapidly expanding past times. I should say at this stage that it is all about fun, the treasures you will find are generally of little or no value, but the real reward is in the hunt.
The history of Geocaching is relatively short given that it evolved soon after Selective Availability was removed from GPS technology on the 2nd May 2000. The first cache was placed the very next day by Dave Ulmer from Beavercreek, Oregon on 3rd May 2000.
Once you have found your first Geocache you may start to think you are looking for the same style of container for every treasure. I am happy to say that this would be a big mistake as you could soon be missing out on some wonderful and creative finds.
